Quilled Rainbow Scrollwork Unicorn

I’m often surprised by how often my customers turn into repeats. That is the case with this Quilled Rainbow Scrollwork Unicorn. The customer who ordered this had previously purchased a gorgeous yellow, gray, and white quilled letter S monogram. When they reached out to request this piece, I was more than thrilled – mostly because my childhood dream animal was the unicorn. I don’t know how many notepads I filled with unicorn drawings!

This piece was very simply made using rainbow scrollwork. I did decide at the last minute to add a real fake eyelash to enhance the sense of whimsy and realism. The horn was made out of foiled cardstock layered about 15 pieces deep. The biggest challenge was making sure that nothing got on the white cardstock. I had no way of protecting it while I worked and was worried a spot would appear after it was done.

As with much of my work, the urge to keep filing in empty spots was threatening to overwhelm me because it just seemed as though the white space on the head and neck of the unicorn needed more fill. But, I let the customer decide when enough was enough by dry-fitting several more scrolls and asking him if he wanted more or less. He chose less.
