The King | Quilled Lion 2.0

I started Roaring Lion late December of 2016 and finished him early January 2017. At the time, I was on a creative binge and was pumping out large, elaborate quilled artwork as fast as my fingers could twirl paper. When the lion was done I felt really accomplished and it has been one of my most popular prints to date. I was really thrilled when a customer requested a remake of him, resulting in The King | Quilled Lion 2.0.

The process of recreating such an elaborate piece of artwork is no small task. I’ve done it twice now – once with Rising Phoenix and now with my lion. There are a lot of pitfalls and interestingly enough, benefits to the process.

The pitfalls include not being able to get an exact copy. So, there is always the worry that a customer will not like the replica as there will inevitably be minor (and sometimes more than minor) differences.

The benefits are that know how you did it the first time so there is less trial and error. Also, given enough time, you can improve upon aspects of the original artwork that you didn’t like as much the first time. In this case, even though I was really pressed for time, I improved upon the nose and eyes.

If you recall from reading my Roaring Lion post from a few years back, the original lion had wonky eyes. I spent several months staring this flaw down and decided eventually to attempt to remove the eyes and rebuild them. Amazingly enough, I was able to do it without ruining the piece. This time around I knew how to keep the eyes level and on the same plane.

Given a little more time I would have found a way to add wispy hairs around the face and I might have done the actual face differently. Who knows, maybe at some point I will make Lion 3.0.

In the end, I’m really pleased with how this one came out. He is far larger than the original and much deeper – so deep in fact that he outgrew my standard frames. I had to order in a really deep display frame to accommodate those gorgeous lashes. I’m not really hot on the frame, but that is something that is easy to change out.
