Roadkill: Art from the Unexpected

Art has a remarkable way of reflecting the world around us, capturing moments, emotions, and even the unexpected. Today, I’d like to share with you a piece of artwork that emerged from a place of curiosity and contemplation—a piece that invites reflection on the intersections of life and creativity.

The artwork in question takes a departure from my usual creations, delving into a realm that some might find unconventional: roadkill. This piece, conceived during a period when I was encountering such scenes more frequently than usual, carries with it a mix of intrigue and introspection.

At its core, this artwork is a visual narrative—an exploration of juxtaposition and symbolism. The canvas itself is a stark black piece of fiberboard, reminiscent of the asphalt that lines our roads. Two quilling strips form yellow lines that traverse the surface, replicating the road’s markings. It’s a canvas that tells a story even before the main components are introduced.

Centered on this canvas lies a pool of bold red paint—a vivid and attention-grabbing element that can’t be ignored. The red serves as a stark contrast to the black and yellow, drawing the eye and setting the stage for what follows.

And what follows is both unexpected and thought-provoking. Nestled within the red pool is the remains of a teddy bear—an object often associated with comfort, innocence, and childhood. Yet here, the teddy bear has been reconfigured, transformed into a part of this unusual tableau.

The transformation doesn’t stop there. On each of the teddy bear’s legs, I’ve added delicate quilled “feet,” a whimsical touch that brings an element of unexpected charm to the piece. It’s as if the teddy bear has taken on a new form, adapted to its surroundings.

As the creator of this artwork, I’ve often pondered the motivation behind its conception. The truth is, creativity doesn’t always adhere to logic or predictability. Perhaps it was the repeated encounters with roadkill that spurred me to explore this theme in a creative context. Maybe it’s a contemplation of life’s fragility and the harsh juxtapositions it presents. Or it could be an artistic exploration of repurposing and finding beauty even in the most unexpected places.

While the piece may evoke different interpretations, what remains undeniable is the power of art to provoke thought, elicit emotions, and open up conversations. Art has the ability to engage us, to make us pause and reflect on the world we live in.

In the end, this artwork is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of creative expression. It’s a reminder that art has the capacity to surprise us, challenge us, and even push boundaries. It’s a snapshot of a moment, a sentiment, and an idea—captured on a canvas and presented for contemplation.

As artists, we are drawn to create from the threads of our experiences, our emotions, and the world around us. And while this particular piece might be unconventional, it’s a part of my creative journey—a journey that continues to evolve, inspire, and sometimes surprise me.
