When it comes to quilling, the possibilities are endless. As an artist, I’m always looking for new ways to push my creative boundaries and explore different techniques. My recent quilled white floral Maine state piece was a departure from my earlier works, taking inspiration from the talented Australian quilling artist Justine Kuran. In this piece, I decided to step away from filling in the state’s outline with scrunched beehive and instead adorned the outside with intricate white floral elements. The result was a beautiful and feminine representation that challenged my skills and opened up a new world of artistic expression.
As an artist who has a deep connection with the state of Maine, creating pieces that pay homage to its unique shape and beauty has always been a part of my creative journey. In my previous works, I filled in the state’s outline with either green or black texture created with scrunched beehive to capture the essence of the landscapes that make Maine so special. However, this time, I wanted to take a different approach and incorporate a technique that was influenced by the work of Justine Kuran.
Justine Kuran’s quilling style often features intricate floral elements that add a touch of elegance and femininity to her pieces. Her ability to weave delicate florals into her compositions inspired me to experiment with a new concept for my quilled Maine state piece. Instead of coloring in the state’s shape, I decided to adorn the outside of the state’s outline with a pattern of white floral coils.
The creative process was a delightful challenge. I began by carefully outlining the shape of Maine using quilled paper strips. Once the basic structure was in place, I started crafting the intricate white floral elements that would grace the exterior of the state. Each coil was meticulously shaped to resemble petals and leaves, and the arrangement was carefully planned to create a harmonious and visually appealing pattern.
The process required patience and precision. As I worked on each individual coil, I found myself engrossed in the delicate nature of the florals. The challenge lay not only in creating each coil with finesse but also in arranging them in a way that complemented the state’s shape and brought a sense of balance to the piece.
The final result was a quilled Maine state piece that exuded elegance and femininity. The departure from my previous techniques allowed me to explore new horizons in quilling and pay tribute to an artist who had inspired me. The white florals against the state’s shape represented a harmony between natural beauty and artistic expression, capturing the essence of Maine in a unique way.
This artistic endeavor was a reminder of the power of inspiration and the value of stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Justine Kuran’s influence encouraged me to experiment with a new technique, resulting in a piece that not only challenged my skills but also brought a fresh perspective to my art.
