This was my fourth attempt at creating a whimsical quilled red Maine lobster, and I was determined to infuse it with the experience and detail it deserved. The result was a whimsical masterpiece bursting with shades of red, crimson, burgundy, peach, aqua, and teal. The high-contrast complementary colors brought the lobster to life in a visually vibrant and unforgettable way.
A Journey of Experience and Detail
My fascination with this enigmatic crustacean begin with two very early renditions, one in red, the otherin blue, and both lacking any significant amount of detail. My next experiment was with a commissioned Zentangle version made with hues of blue, purple, and orange. I always wanted to revisit this Maine icon, so when presented with the opportunity to create an auction item for the Maine Lobsterman’s Association benefit, I jumped on it.
The Creative Process Unfolded
Creating this red Maine lobster was an exhilarating and time-consuming process. Using tight coils of paper, I meticulously built the lobster’s form, capturing every nuance of its textured anatomy. The diverse color palette of reds, crimsons, burgundies, peaches, aquas, and teals came together harmoniously, breathing life into this whimsical creature.
Donating to the Maine Lobsterman’s Association
As a gesture of appreciation for Maine’s cherished marine fishing heritage, I donated this artwork to the Maine Lobsterman’s Association benefit auction. It was an opportunity to give back to the community and support the important work they do. The anticipation of the auction was exciting, as I hoped my creation would find a home with someone who cherished it as much as I did.
A Bittersweet Outcome
While I poured my heart and soul into the creation of this quilled red Maine lobster, the aftermath of the auction left me with mixed emotions. Unfortunately, the South Bristol Lobster’s Co-op, the organization handling the auction, failed to provide any feedback or information about the winning bid or the recipient. This lack of communication left me mildly disappointed, as I had hoped to connect with the buyer and share in their appreciation of the piece.
The Joy of the Journey
Despite the disappointing outcome, I remind myself that the true joy of being an artist lies in the creative process and the ability to bring joy to others through art. The journey of crafting this whimsical lobster was filled with excitement, challenges, and growth. Knowing that my art contributed to a charitable cause was gratifying in itself.
